List of Railway Coach Codes

CodeDescription
A2-tier air conditioned coach. There will be 2 berths (upper & lower) facing each other and 2 side berths (side upper & lower) in every group (hence 6 in a group). These berths are typically wider than the 3-tier berths.
ABCombination of 2-tier air conditioned and 3-tier air conditioned
B3-tier air conditioned. Berths are similar to that of a sleeper coach <a href='/code/coach/S'>type S</a>, with 8 in a group viz. lower, middle and upper facing each other and two side berths
CAir conditioned chair car. Mostly found in day trains, these are AC coaches with push-back seats laid out as 3+3 with an aisle in between.
DBookable second class seat. These are similar to the 3+3 unreserved coaches marked with seat numbers, except that these are reserveable.
DECombination of second class & executive chair class. Usually such coaches are divided in the middle, each half being a separate class.
EExecutive chair class. Wider seats and more spacious than a regular chair car.
EXTExtra coach. Unclassified extra coaches are likely to be of the lowest class in that train, though not mandatorily.
FFirst class non-air conditioned. These are rooms with a door and there are no side berths outside. Accommodates 4 or 2 in a room.
G3-tier air conditioned (Garib Rath). Garibh Rath version of class S.
HFirst class air conditioned coach. Similar in layout to the non air conditioned first class of <a href='/code/coach/F'>type F</a>.
HACombination of first class air conditioned <a href='/code/coach/H'>type H</a> & 2-tier air conditioned <a href='/code/coach/A'>type A</a>
HBCombination of first class air conditioned <a href='/code/coach/H'>type H</a> & 3-tier air conditioned <a href='/code/coach/B'>type B</a>
JChair class air-conditioned (Garib Rath). Garibh Rath version of class C.
RARAC 2-tier air conditioned. RAC in a coach type A.
RBRAC 3-tier air conditioned. RAC in a coach type B.
RGRAC 3-tier air conditioned (Garib Rath). RAC in a coach type G.
RSRAC sleeper class. RAC in a coach type S.
SSleeper class. There are usually 8 berths in a group viz. lower, middle and upper facing each other and two side berths. In some alternate layouts, side also has a middle berth thus making a group of 9 berths.
SESecond class executive chair is a non-AC version of the <a href='/code/coach/E'>E class</a>

List of Railway Quota Codes

CodeDescription
CKTatkal quota. This denotes the seats earmarked for sale under Tatkal scheme (i.e. sold one day before the train departs, with some extra charges). Due to high demand in most trains, it is not easy to book a ticket under this quota unless you are among the first few people at the counter when booking starts. Currently the booking starts at 10am the previous day of journey. This is also available for online booking on IRCTC at the same time.
DFDefence quota. This is quota allotted to defense personnel and can be booked at counters with appropriate proof. Online reservation on IRCTC or other websites hasn't extended to this quota yet.
DPDuty pass quota. This is meant for Railway staff on official duty. This quota is not available for online booking on IRCTC or other websites.
FTForeign tourist quota. This quota is meant for tourists with an appropriate visa. Tourists taking a Rail Pass gets booked under this quota when they avail tickets using the pass.
GNGeneral quota. General quota is all seats remaining after the other quotas are alloted in a train. Seats not used up on other quotas also can get added here at the time of charting. This is available for online booking via IRCTC.
GNRSGeneral quota road side is alloted to those stations not yet connected to the centralised passenger reservation system. This quota is not available for online booking on IRCTC or other websites.
HOHigh official / head quarters quota. This quota is not available for online booking on IRCTC or other websites.
HPPhysically handicapped quota. This quota is not available for online booking on IRCTC or other websites.

List of Railway Status Codes

CodeDescription
CAN-MODCancelled or Modified Passenger. This status is assigned to a passenger (or ticket) modified or cancelled after booking.
RACReservation Against Cancellation. You are assured a place to sit in this case where a side berth is shared by two. In case of cancellations, people from this list will be considered first for confirmation. One cancellation will result in two confirmations as the shared berth and cancelled berth becomes available.
WL-nWaiting List Number. The number denotes your position on the waiting list queue.
WLWaiting List Number. The number denotes your position on the waiting list queue. After n cancellations, wait listed passengers will usually move on to the RAC list. In case of Tatkal there is no RAC, hence WL moves directly to confirmed.
GNWLGeneral Wait List. Tickets issued by originating stations and nearby ones will be under this quota.
RLWLRemote Location Wait List. These are wait listed tickets issued by stations in between and for part journeys. On a route A-B-C-D-E-F-G a ticket from C to E is likely to be on RLWL if waitlisted and is less likely to get confirmed.
PQWLPooled Quota Wait List. Pooled Quota is maintained for an important sub-route within the full route, if the sub-route is popular and deserves its own quota. Usually this will be from originating station and nearby stations, to a popular town other than destination that comes en route.
REGRET-WLNo More Booking Permitted. This status is shown when the train is taking no more bookings as RAC and WL bookings also are fully booked.
R-n-nRAC, with the two numbers denoting Coach Number and Berth Number
RELEASEDTicket Not Cancelled but Alternative Accommodation Provided
CNFConfirmed (Coach/Berth number will be available after chart preparation). You are assured to have a berth during travel, wait for the chart to be prepared to know the exact coach and berth.
